Back in 2009, when I first became a personal trainer, I was obsessed with lifting.
I had just gotten certified, and with the internet not being quite what it is today, the best way to learn (and bond with my coworkers) was to train together.
And train, we did.
At that gym, at least five of the trainers were competitive bodybuilders, and I tagged along with them five days a week—soaking up whatever I could.
And man… we did some dumb stuff.
I weighed about 30 pounds less than I do now, but I was routinely lifting 30-50% more than I would ever touch today. With terrible form.
More than a little body English… more than a few “that’s all you, bro” reps where my spotters definitely lifted more than I did… and more than a few scoops of pre-workout so strong it made my skin tingle.
Yeah. Real, real dumb.
And my body still reminds me of those mistakes today.
But even though the training methods were far from smart (and I have the lingering injuries to prove it), I walked away with two big lessons:
1️⃣ What not to do. Lifting way too heavy, grinding through bad form, and chasing exhaustion instead of actual progress? Yeah… hard pass.
2️⃣ Why people actually stick with training. It wasn’t just about the workouts—it was the camaraderie, the accountability, and the feeling of getting better together.
And that is exactly what I bring into my coaching today.
Smart, effective training based on science—but with the same sense of fun and accountability that kept me coming back, even when the workouts were questionable.
Because at the end of the day, the best program is the one you actually stick with.
