The Three Laws of Strength Training: Communication, Consistency, and Fun

I’ve had the same process for about 17 years now when I meet a new client.

After a quick tour of the gym and a little chat about what to expect during the session, we sit down and go through what I call their bill of health.

We cover exercise history, sign a few waivers, and talk goals — what they want, what they need, and how I can help them get there.

Then I tell them something most trainers probably don’t:
if I don’t think I can help, I’ll say so.

But if everything lines up, I share the three things I expect from every client.

1. Communicate.
I’ll always tell you what we’re doing and why.
And no—the answer will never be “because it’s harder that way.”
It’s always science.

Wolff’s Law. Davis’s Law. The law of gravity.
Not “my opinion, man.”
You do the right things, your body adapts. Every time.

2. Be consistent.
This one’s changed the most for me over the years.

Back when I started, consistency meant 2 workouts a week for 50 out of 52 weeks.
100 sessions.
Done and done.

Now?
It’s what happens in the other 166 hours that really counts.

Your warmup.
Your mobility.
Your sleep.
Your recovery.

As I’ve gotten older, those things matter more than ever.

I turned 40 this past summer, and after a weekend celebrating with college buddies—
a few too many beers, pretending we were still 20—
I’m still recovering…

And training’s the same way.
It’s not about whether you can do it once.
It’s whether you can do it and come back again… and again… and again.

3. Have fun.
I’ve never believed the ends justify the means—because that never lasts.

But fun? That lasts.

If I asked, “Hey, want to go have some fun?”
You wouldn’t say no. No one ever has.

So we make training fun.
Because if you enjoy it, you’ll stay consistent.
And when you’re consistent, you’ll adapt.

That’s just how it works.
Wolff’s Law. Davis’s Law.
And maybe Nate’s Law too.

Some lessons you only see in reverse.
