Start Where You Are: The Real Secret to Safe Strength Training Over 50

Saturday we took Ella to the pumpkin patch.

They had face painting, a hay maze, and one of those little stations where kids get to paint pumpkins.

At one point, she took off running toward it — arms flailing, knees high, full Napoleon Dynamite energy.

I swear, it was like watching a baby giraffe trying to sprint for the first time.
Laura and I just looked at each other and laughed.

But later that night, I kept thinking about it.

Because that’s exactly how most people start their fitness journey.

They mean well.
They’re excited.
They just… go.

But they skip the crawling part.
The rolling part.
The part where your joints remember how to be joints again.

Then something starts hurting — a knee, a back, a shoulder —
and suddenly they’re wondering what went wrong.

It’s not that they’re broken.
They just skipped a few steps.

You roll before you crawl.
You crawl before you walk.
You walk before you run.

And the same thing applies to training.

Start on the floor.
Learn to stabilize again.
Then start moving on your feet.
Then add some strength.
Then maybe — maybe — run.

You don’t need to be perfect.
You just need to start where you are — not where you wish you were.

That’s how you build something that actually lasts.
