The Smartest Decision I Ever Made (And What It Means for You)

"Over 50 fitness client pushing limits during strength training in Central Austin.

One of the smartest things I’ve ever done was put myself in a room where I was the dumbest guy there.

Coming from a small town where I was valedictorian, president of every club imaginable, and one of the top scorers on the ACT, it would’ve been easy to stay close to home and coast. But I did the opposite.

I sought out a college that ranked #1 in academics for schools its size—Trinity University.

And let me tell you, that place was no joke.

For example, when I took Spanish 1 at Trinity, we covered all 22 chapters of the textbook. A local university back home? They took that same book and split it into three classes—Spanish 1 covered Chapters 1-7, Spanish 2 covered 8-14, and Spanish 3 finally tackled the last section.

Meanwhile, Spanish 3 at Trinity? It was full immersion—no English allowed. You were expected to be fluent, not still learning basic conjugations.

That was the level of expectation across the board. Every class moved at that pace. And the people? Brilliant.

I went from being the “smartest guy in town” to sitting in a room full of people who could run intellectual circles around me. And I loved it.

Because when you surround yourself with people who are operating at a higher level, it forces you to stretch what you believe is possible.

And fitness is no different.

If all you’ve ever seen is people your age slowing down…

You might think that’s just how aging works. But if you start surrounding yourself with people in their 60s knocking out pull-ups, or in their 70s running companies with sharp minds and strong bodies… suddenly, you realize what’s actually possible.
