Teach Them The Buttons

One of my nephews graduated a few days ago.

And while I know you’re not supposed to play favorites…

I love that guy because he has always taken a little bit of advice and then ran a long way with it.

I remember one Christmas having all 3 of my nephews over and we were playing this boxing game called Fight Night.

My middle nephew was absolutely whomping on his brothers because he had stayed up all night practicing.

Finally, I told him:

“At least teach them the buttons so they stand a chance.”

And without hesitation he said:

“Why would I do that?”

I remember responding:

“So you actually know you’re the best.”

“What’s the point in winning if it isn’t earned?”

“You might as well put it on computer mode, set a second controller over there, and just beat up a defenseless person.”

So he taught them.

And honestly?

He taught them really well.

Then he still beat them.

Which is funny because teaching is often one of the best ways to learn something yourself.

I could tell you a lot more stories about that kid, but honestly that moment told me everything I needed to know about him.

He’s going to be okay.

Because he understands something a lot of people never figure out:

Satisfaction doesn’t come from winning.

It comes from earning things.

That’s always been one of my favorite parts about fitness too.

Whether you’re the CEO or the janitor…

You still have to earn it.

Now, while you do have to earn it…

It sure helps when someone teaches you what the buttons do first.

You Can Keep “Thinking About It”… Or You Can Start Earning It.
