In a galaxy, not so far away lives a kid born with one arm who became the one-armed judo champ.
He did his research and found the best sensei to learn from. On his first day of lessons, he walked around the studio and saw all of the other kids doing a lot of really cool Judo moves and he couldn’t wait to start.
His sensei taught him his first move and asked him to practice it the entire hour.
The kid returns the next day and the sensei once again asks him to repeat this move. This continues day after day, week after week. He becomes impatient and asks the sensei if he can learn other moves but he replies “no, keep practicing this move”, so, he begrudgingly does as the Sensei asks.
After some time, the kid enters a local Judo tournament. He has his first match and WHAM! slams the other kid to the ground within seconds. Everyone was shocked!
At his second match, he and again slams his opponent to the ground within moments. This continues until he reaches the championship round where he is set to face off against the three-time defending champ.
The champ is bigger, stronger, and more experienced than the kid. They tussled for a few moments but yet again the kid slams the champ and the kid became the new champ!
On the drive home, the kid and the sensei had an eye-opening conversation:
“Please tell me the truth Sensei, did the other kids let me win? They have so much experience and all I have is this one move,” asks the one-armed judo champ.
The sensei replies, “No my son, you are the champ you beat them fair and square.”
“But how is that possible Sensei?!” asks the one-armed judo champ.
The Sensei replies, “Because the move I taught you only has one counter and that is to grab the opponent by his left arm.”
Moral of the story?
Don’t underestimate what you can accomplish and listen to your coach. Often the simplest approach is the best approach as long as it fits the student and knows that you CAN turn a perceived weakness into your greatest strength.
What is your greatest weakness? And how could you leverage it to get a better outcome?
