I learned something the other day, but first I want to tell a parable.
It is that of Theseus Ship.
Normally, this is a story of philosophy, but it is all I can think of when I think of this thing I learned.
In case you aren’t familiar with story of Theseus Ship it goes like this:
“The ship wherein Theseus and the youth of Athens returned from Crete had thirty oars, and was preserved by the Athenians down even to the time of Demetrius Phalereus, for they took away the old planks as they decayed, putting in new and stronger timber in their places, insomuch that this ship became a standing example among the philosophers, for the logical question of things that grow; onside holding that the ship remained the same, and the other contending that it was not the same.” – Plutarch, Theseus
Heavy I know.
Here is what it has to do with fitness and what I learned the other day.
Your muscles are both decaying and re-growing – day and night – for your entire life. At such a rate that every four months you have BRAND NEW MUSCLES.
Yes, three times a year you have brand new muscles. And you have brand new blood cells every three months and brand-new bones every couple of years.
Cells are not immortal, which is a good thing (those that died off could have had cancer for example).
And, here is the thing – depending upon the choices you have made and the actions you have taken those new cells can be younger or older.
Either, you can replace the ‘old rotten planks’ of the ship with more old and rotten planks OR you could have replaced everything with ‘Iron’.
Brand new muscles that are made of newer and stronger substances – a new and younger bodied you!
Back to the thought experiment of Theseus Ship.
Is this ‘New You” still ‘YOU’?
Because, this new you is a Transformed You.
Doing things that the old ‘you’ would have never done and are now capable of things that the old ‘you’ would have never even dreamed of, much less enjoyed.
Reshaping your body on a molecular level through diet and exercise is scientifically proven, and, the process of doing so will reshape WHO you are – that’s an undeniable fact.
It’s science after all.
Train Smart.
You Got This,
