I promise my clients that they can double or even triple their strength within only thirty days of starting.
They are usually surprised to hear me make that promise and wonder how it’s possible. The answer is simple; our bodies get smarter leading to increases in intermuscular and intramuscular coordination.
These are just college words that mean your muscles learn to work in concert together and you are able to recruit more of the actual muscle fibers you already possess.
When breaking down this phenomenon I ALWAYS think of one of the most notable skits from Saturday Night Live Skit. (Please watch, it will make you smile and drive home today’s lesson.)
Before participating in a proper resistance training program you most likely have TOO MUCH COWBELL. Your hip flexors, lower back, and chest muscles are playing out of sync with the rest of the band.
This doesn’t mean that we don’t need the cowbell; it IS part of a great song. We just need that cowbell to be played at the right time, with the right proficiency and the right volume.
And at the same time, we need some of the other great musicians in the band to turn their volume up – in your body that would be your ‘core’ muscles.
When all the individual muscle groups are playing the same song in the same key the body can make beautiful music in the form of enhanced strength and flexibility.
“We do programs at Stowe Training just like everyone else does; one at a time; only when we do programs we make platinum records.” And if you didn’t get that joke….then go watch the video above; it will make your day!
