When I was twelve years old I baked my very first birthday cake.
The recipe called for the mix, a few other ingredients, and ‘two whole eggs’. I am a very literal person so this led to me dumping two whole eggs, shell and all, into the mixture and then mixing with an egg beater.
The cake was delicious but every single bite had a distinct crunch from the eggshells 😉
I ate about ¼ of the cake before tapping out, throwing it away, and enjoying my grandma’s much better, shell-less version.
I tell this story as a reminder that we all start somewhere. No matter how bad we may seem in the beginning, it really isn’t that big of a deal and we can only hope to get better.
Don’t neglect that your grandmother has forty or fifty years of experience baking cakes, with that much experience, it only makes sense that hers are probably better.
The person you admire on the magazine cover, in the movie, or just strutting around the local gym probably has decades of experience on you. Naturally, they will be better at working out and will look the part.
That doesn’t mean you can’t get there too.
You just need to start somewhere, make some mistakes, learn from those mistakes, and try again. Fail forward. Fail better. Then succeed.
What is something you remember beginning, sucking at it, but now are better?
For real, I would love to hear your story,
Nate
