Too much too soon.
This is how most people approach fitness. You decide to join a gym and lose twenty pounds. You begin working really hard doing all of the “best exercises” like deadlifts, squats, and bench press.
Progress is going great.
You are losing weight and turning heads.
But then, a shoulder starts to bug you. You decide to skip a workout and let it rest. Then a knee gets a little “wonky” so you rest that a bit. Now it’s your back, and yet another week or so of rest.
Pretty soon it is hard to work out consistently and you slowly begin to gain the weight back. Finally, you decide to just “take a break” and give it another try next year – the cycle continues.
Here’s the thing – you were doomed to failure from the get-go.
99% of the programs out there focus on helping you lose 20lbs (or whatever the goal is) and can/do work when you actually perform the program. The problem is that they aren’t designed to help you build a solid foundation. Eventually, the body starts to crumble because it just can’t stand the test of time. Your joints can’t handle the beating.
But, how do we strengthen our tendons and joints to avoid future pains from resistance training?
Lowering a weight more slowly – this technique helps to accentuate the strengthening of your tendons.
By constantly focusing on slowing down the lowering portion of an exercise, your tendons and joints WILL increase in strength. Applying this technique for a few months before lifting relatively heavier weights (which is needed to change your physique) will help you from having joint issues in the future as a result of your resistance training efforts.
Now, when your physique changes, you won’t be forced to take any breaks and can finally reach your goals.
