Now make a BETTER fist… REALLY squeeze it…
What do you feel? Your forearm and perhaps your biceps a little bit, right?
I want you to make the mightiest fist ever – the turning coal into diamonds type of fist.
NOW, what do you feel?
Not only your fist, forearms, and biceps but also, likely your shoulder and your chest muscles too.
That, my friends, is irradiation at work.
Anytime we contract one muscle, the muscles adjacent will automatically contract as well enabling you to produce more force.
This is one of the many reasons I teach my clients how to engage their core, glute, and mid-back muscles when they first begin with exercises like the dead bug, glute bridge, and Prone A. As you can control and contract those muscles harder you will ‘irradiate’ and be able to produce more force through your upper body in exercises such as the pushup and pullup as well as lower body exercises like the lunge or squat.
Science for the win!
