Get Busy Living Or Get Busy Dying

Get Busy Hands down my favorite movie of all time is ‘The Shawshank Redemption’.

I’m embarrassed to admit how many times I’ve seen it (300+ no exaggeration).

Heck I might watch it again after I finish writing this!

The other day I was watching Shawshank yet again when my wife Laura walked in and asked “Did he get out again?!”
​
Her delivery was pitch-perfect and I cracked up; but spoiler alert, YES, he does get out again.

I was thinking of this movie when I was reminded of one of the better quotes.

Red says, “You can either get busy living or you can get busy dying.”

Now, he was talking about prison but I couldn’t help to think about our bodies being a prison in the retirement years.

You spend all of your life working and delaying gratification to reach the ultimate goal of retirement and THEN your body is a prison – you have time and money but you can’t do the things you want to do.

You can’t ski, camp, dance, bike or simply climb a flight of stairs. And, if you can’t do what you want to do, then do you really have freedom?

The thing is – it doesn’t have to be that way.

Much like Andy Dufrene, you can choose to live.

You just need ‘Time and Consistency’. I’m using my Morgan Freeman voice here as he says “Time and Pressure”.

If you consistently participate in a Progressive Strength Training Program and do it Consistently then you can build an entirely new body – and new life.

Medications gone.

Unneeded surgeries not needed.

That flight of stairs ain’t a big step because you’re a stepper.

Here is the thing though – it won’t be given to you. You must earn it and you earn it daily.

Start today.

And then go do that fitness thing again tomorrow.

And the day after that.

It’s your new job. Just like it was Andy’s new job to dig that tunnel – one handful of dirt at a time.
