[Common Exercise Mistakes #1]
With our 6 Week Test Drive coming up at the studio I thought it would be fun to highlight some common mistakes that most people – including myself – make when starting a new exercise routine.
These will not be in any particular order; just whatever pops into my head when its time to talk into a camera…;/)
Not Addressing Postural Issues.
For most folks there are certain muscles in the body that need to be strengthened and others that need to be lengthened.
Not doing so will inevitably lead to a loss in future performance (strength gains, flexibility gains, muscle gains, and fat loss) or to a straight up injury (total loss of all gains).
It’s not a matter of “if” but a matter of “when”.
A quick analogy if you will because I like analogies!
Imagine you are driving a fast car on a race track or other safe and legal area.
How fast would you go?
For most they would drive relatively fast.
Now imagine that car has no brakes.
How fast would you go now?
Probably pretty slow I would hope.
Same thing when your posture isn’t addressed….you have no brakes!
Without any “brakes” your body simply will not allow you to demonstrate your peak physical abilities.
Improving one’s posture is as simple as choosing the right strengthening and flexibility exercises.
For strengthening we basically want to stick to the “mirror muscles”.
Those are the muscles you can NOT see in the mirror.
Upper back, the back of the shoulders, glutes, and the only one you can see in the mirror; your abs.
For lengthening you will focus on the muscles of the front of your body.
These include the front of the shoulders, chest, hip flexors, and the only muscles on the back of your body; the calves.
Pay close attention to your exercise selection and what you are strengthening and stretching to achieve optimum posture and eventually optimum results.
Tomorrow I will be back with some actual exercises you can do to help with these goals!
