Train Your Core with Isometric Exercises
I always think of the line from ‘The Fist Foot Way’ when I think of how to train your core most efficiently. In case you haven’t seen the movie; Danny McBride’s character asks Black Belt/Movie Star ‘Chuck The Truck’ what he does to stay in great shape. “You must lift weights man?!” and he replies “Isometrics bro – just look at the Jungle Kingdom. Panthers don’t lift weights and they are badass”.
I cracked up during the scene but also thought ‘He’s not wrong’.
Research has shown that our ‘core’ muscles job is not to produce movement but to PREVENT movement.
Everything else (arms and legs) should be moving while our trunk remains stable.
Doing so not only helps us prevent or ‘cure’ injuries, but also helps us move better in situations such as climbing stairs, going for a hike working in the yard, or riding a bicycle.
This leads me to my next pro tip; train your core with isometric exercises
Let’s replace all of those crunches, sit-ups, and Russian twists with the following exercises:
2. Side Plank
3. Short Plank with Knee March
5. Prone Arm March
There are many more options, but I think this is a decent list to get you started.
Again, not only will your back thank you but you will also get MUCH stronger from this simple switch up of exercises.
As always, give this a shot as soon as you can and let me know what you think!
