Your warm-up might be backwards

A lot of people treat their warm-up like a formality.

Walk in.

A few random stretches.

Maybe a treadmill.

Then straight into the workout.

But honestly?

Your warm-up should be giving you information.

If an exercise feels terrible at the beginning of a session…

But suddenly feels smooth after a few specific movements?

That tells you something.

Usually one of two things:

  • you weren’t ready for the movement yet
  • or your body needed to access a position first before loading it

That’s a huge difference.

Because many people assume:

“squats hurt my knees”

When really:

“loaded squats hurt my knees before my hips and ankles are prepared for them.”

Very different problem.

That’s why I pay close attention to what changes during a session.

Because the body gives clues constantly.

You just have to know what you’re looking at.

Still Waiting for Your Body to “Feel Ready”?

Here’s the truth: after 50, your body does not reward guesswork.

If squats hurt, your knees may not be the real problem. If your shoulder complains, the shoulder may only be the messenger. And if every workout starts with stiffness, pain, or hesitation, your body may be telling you something important.

You can ignore those signals and hope things magically improve.

Or you can train with a plan built for the body you actually have today.

At Stowe Personal Training in Austin, I help adults over 50 get stronger without being thrown into random workouts, bootcamp nonsense, or exercises that beat up their joints.
