When I was young, my parents divorced.
And I was given a choice.
I could live with my dad on a 4,000-acre ranch. Big house. Material comfort. The kind of setup where most kids would say yes without thinking twice.
Or I could live with my mom.
An apartment at first. Assisted welfare. Later a trailer park in south Louisiana.
I chose my mom.
And it was the right choice.
Not because one life was “better.”
But because I learned something I wouldn’t have learned otherwise.
I learned how to be happy with what I had.
I learned that circumstances don’t determine contentment.
And maybe most importantly — I learned what it feels like to choose.
That’s the part that sticks with me now.
A lot of people look at fitness the way I looked at those two houses.
One path looks flashy.
The other looks simple.
One promises comfort and quick wins.
The other requires patience.
But here’s the thing.
The value isn’t in the scenery.
It’s in knowing you chose it.
Strength works the same way.
No one is forcing you to train.
No one is forcing you to move.
But when you choose it — when you decide this is the path you’re walking — it changes how it feels.
It’s no longer punishment.
It’s ownership.
And ownership tends to last longer than hype.
