Why Most People Over 50 Get Hurt Lifting Weights—and How to Train Smarter

When I was in my 20s, I thought lifting weights was simple:
Pick up something heavy. Put it down. Repeat with something a little heavier net time.

And for a while, that worked…until:

I once benched until my left arm went completely numb.
Another time, I racked a barbell and a lightning bolt shot through my back—so bad I couldn’t breathe.
And then there was the ACL tear, rebounding a basketball after “warming up” with a hundred three-pointers.

Sound familiar?

Here’s what I finally learned: lifting weights is a lot like flying a plane.
It’s not the takeoff that’s dangerous.
It’s the landing.

Most people skip the “boring” stuff—the lighter, higher-rep work that teaches your joints and muscles how to actually listen to each other. That’s the landing gear. Without it, every heavier rep is just a crash waiting to happen.

I see it all the time with folks in their 50s. They’re active, motivated, and not afraid of hard work… but their bodies keep breaking down because nobody ever taught them the right sequence.

Other people camp out in the bodybuilding zone forever. Great for muscle—until the joints start creaking, because the foundation never got built.

And then there are the daredevils chasing max strength or explosive moves before they’re ready. Like trying to land a plane without wheels. Looks fine at first. Ends ugly.

That’s why so many people get hurt.
Not because lifting is dangerous… but because they’re playing the wrong game for where their body actually is.

The good news? Once you know the order of things, the whole picture changes. Lifting stops feeling like Russian roulette with your joints—and starts feeling like freedom.

Because the real danger isn’t the weight itself.
It’s trying to take off before you’ve learned how to land.
