Why Most Strength Programs Hurt You Over 50 (And What To Do Instead)

Man doing safe strength training with dumbbells in Austin gym for over 50 fitness.

You know you should lift weights, right?

With the explosion of guided fitness programs like OrangeTheory, F45, CrossFit, and countless bootcamps—it’s clear the message is out:

Strength training is the fountain of youth.

But here’s the problem…

You keep getting hurt.

Maybe even while working with a trainer.

And no one seems to have a good answer why—just more tweaks, more gear, or more vague advice like “engage your core.”

But here’s one major reason most programs miss:

They chase short-term benefits (like lifting heavier weights)… at the expense of your long-term ability to keep showing up.

Take the barbell back squat. You’ve probably been told it’s the “king of all exercises.”

And that’s exactly why it’s everywhere—even though I wouldn’t let most of my clients over 15, much less 50 go anywhere near it.

Why? Simple:

The benefit of putting a barbell on your back is that you can lift more weight.

The risk? You throw out your back, jack up your hip, or tweak a knee—again.

And just like that… you’re starting over.

That’s why I teach my clients to load weights in the front.

It’s safer, more core-friendly, easier on the joints—and (bonus!) makes it easier to hit good range of motion without wrecking your body.

When the weight’s in front, you feel what’s working. You can move confidently. And you’ll know instantly when something’s off.

Let’s Cut to the Chase

Most people over 50 keep spinning their wheels because they’re stuck with one-size-fits-all workouts… or worse, nothing at all.

If you’re serious about staying strong, out of the doctor’s office, and off your kids’ worry lists — join one of my programs today and get a real plan that actually works.

Fine. But at least educate yourself so you stop making the same mistakes over and over. Here are three posts that will open your eyes:

Do something smart today. Or keep doing what you’ve always done… and keep getting what you’ve always got.
