The Biggest Lesson I Learned Selling Cars (And How It Applies to Your Fitness)

"Austin personal trainer explains how time management skills from selling cars apply to smart fitness training."

My first job out of college was selling new cars at Charles Maund Toyota. I’d just landed in Austin with $1,000 to my name and some big dreams, and I needed a job—fast. But I had rules:

  • No late nights. I was 21 and ready to explore Austin’s nightlife.
  • A paycheck that would cover concerts, tacos, and rent.
  • Real skills that’d be useful down the road.

Car sales fit the bill. But on one memorable Saturday, I got a masterclass in opportunity cost.

A couple came in wanting to test drive a Corolla…for three hours.
We hit the highway for acceleration tests.
Bounced down bumpy roads to check suspension.
Wound through Westlake for handling.
And made sure it fit in their garage.

After all that? They told me they were six months away from deciding.
And they never came back.

Meanwhile, 20 other people walked into the dealership and bought cars that day.
But I missed them, tied up in a marathon test drive.

Lesson learned: How you spend your time matters.

And here’s where it connects to your fitness.

If you’re tight on time—or just don’t want to spend hours in the gym—you’ve got to train smart.

Skip the random, ineffective workouts.
Avoid routines that don’t work with your body (and end up causing aches and pains).
Focus on what actually gets you results—efficiently and effectively.
